Janet Walker is a small company based in East Riding that manufactures bespoke, high end soft furnishings. The company employs 20 workroom staff in addition to a small customer facing team. We worked with the owner to establish the company’s compliance with current UK employment legislation.

We drafted all required documentation including contracts and policies & procedures, producing a company handbook. We included additional sections covering Health & Safety, performance management, attendance/absence, induction, training and staff wellbeing. We continued to support the company by advising on a range of HR issues.

Following the merger of three colleges into one organisation Leeds City College underwent a massive restructure. We supported various management teams through the assessment process required to populate the new structure, focusing on the areas of management and leadership. The project involved working closely with senior management to provide independent input into the assessment process as a member of the assessment panel.

This client was an SME based in the media industry which provided subtitling (foreign language and hard of hearing) for film and TV. We worked with them over a period of 4 years initially completing a number of individual projects and then on a retainer to provide a Head of HR. The transition took place when the company began to grow and needed help with acquisitions. As well as giving the company access to HR services that they would not otherwise have had we also liaised with clients on their behalf, carried out due diligence in relation to acquisitions, trained and coached managers in generic and people management skills and handled disciplinary and grievance cases. With our help the company successful floated.

This client was the UK subsidiary of a large American parent with operations at Gatwick and Heathrow. We worked with them over a period of 3 years during which time they grew to have operations at all major UK airports and most of the minor ones. We helped the organisation by establishing good employment practice and worked with line managers and unions to improve recruitment and retention. Later Elaine acted as Head of HR working with organisations such as BA, BAA, KLM and Air France on various projects. She also headed up outsourcing projects on behalf of the client. Once the organisation had reached a point where they needed an in-house department, we set it up and recruited an HR professional to run it.

This client was a group of small, specialist construction companies and was privately owned. The owners wanted to either float or sell and we worked with them over a period of 20 months at the end of which they successfully sold the group. We contributed to this by giving them a 3 year plan to improve management skills, improve recruitment and retention rates, set up an apprenticeship scheme, managed discipline and grievance cases and establish good employment practice. This led to an improvement in profitability and efficiency so attracting a better than expected offer for the company.

Elaine completed two assignments for this client which was a large national manufacturing company. The first was to lead an information and consultation exercise in relation to a site restructure. She worked with trade union representatives and line managers regarding possible redundancies. This included managing the process, dealing with all documentation, heading information and consultation meetings, producing selection criteria and carrying out selection for redundancy, hearing appeals and handing down decisions. At the same time Elaine carried out a number of operational HR activities including reducing the number of employees on long term absence and managing a disciplinary caseload.

The second assignment related to the management of a number of collective grievances at several sites and an allegation of racial harassment. Elaine managed all cases through to a successful conclusion with no further action required.
